Sir Ian Holm, 88, who portrays the character of Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, has succumbed to Parkinson’s disease. The actor, who is also an Oscar nominee, recently apologized for not being able to attend the video event with all the Lord of the Rings players and he explained his situation with these sentences:
‘I am sorry for couldn’t see you face to face. I miss you all. I hope our adventures take you to many places.
A statement from his agent Alex Irwin said: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. His illness was Parkinson’s related.
His role as Sam Mussabini in Chariots Of Fire earned him a special award at the Cannes Film Festival, a Bafta award and an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.
The last days of Holm were documented in a series of pastel portraits by his wife Sophie de Stempel.
